An early pregnancy scan, offered between weeks 5 and 11 of pregnancy, is also known as a first trimester viability scan, or a dating scan. Many of our patients, who have experience of healthcare in the USA or the rest of Europe, are used to the early pregnancy scan being a routine part of their pregnancy care. The first ultrasound scan in pregnancy is often taken up by women with a history of previous problems, such as ectopic pregnancy or recurrent miscarriages, and by women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF.
It is also requested for early reassurance or accurate dating, when there is no history of previous problems. You can come to us for an early pregnancy scan from week 5 of pregnancy, which is 1 day after the first day of your missed period. We are happy to see you with or without a doctor’s referral. An early pregnancy scan takes around 30 minutes and is carried out by either our specialist prenatal sonographer Ms Ciara McKenna or our doctor Dr David Nyberg who specialises in prenatal diagnosis.
You will be able to see the images of your baby on screen and your specialist will talk through them in detail with you, and advise you about what you need to do next. Our prenatal doctor and sonographer will review and discuss the ultrasound images before sending a report to your doctor within 24 hours. We’ll give you a copy of your report shortly after your appointment, or we can send one by email.
12 weeks pregnant – all you need to know
There’s no ultrasound image of your baby-to-be for weeks 1 and 2. While your healthcare provider counts these two weeks toward your due date, you aren’t really pregnant. Your pregnancy due date is calculated using the first day of your last menstrual period. Obviously you weren’t pregnant at that time, but it’s the best reference your health care provider has for estimating baby’s arrival day until you get an ultrasound, which may provide a more accurate due date.

The nuchal translucency NT refers to the pocket of fluid at the back of the fetal neck. The measurement of the nuchal translucency is part of the combined screening test for trisomy 21 and trisomy 18, called enhanced First Trimester Screen eFTS. An increased NT measurement increases the chance for other chromosome differences, additional genetic conditions, and can also be helpful to predict structural differences that might be more obvious later in pregnancy such as a heart defect.
At the time of the NT ultrasound, the sonographer or physician who does the scan can also accurately predict your due date, determine how many babies you are carrying and examine the early basic structural development of the fetus. Examples of circumstances when this may be applicable are: declining to have prenatal screening for trisomy 21 and trisomy 18, Non-invasive Prenatal Testing NIPT has already been initiated, or the pregnant individual is carrying more than two babies triplets, quadruplets etc.
Your health care provider will schedule your NT ultrasound at a hospital or a clinic with a certified NT sonographer or physician. We are updating the map regularly by removing the NT ultrasound sites that we know to be closed at the moment. However, w e recommend contacting the facility of interest to confirm that their status is up-to-date and that they are offering NT ultrasound services during the evolving COVID pandemic.
This map is merely a tool to assist providers and the public in locating NT ultrasound services in Ontario. The following caveats apply:. If you do not have access to a hospital or a clinic with a certified NT sonographer or physician, your health care provider can give you information on other prenatal screening options, or provide you with choices on the closest location to obtain this scan. If you choose to have NT ultrasound, the sonographer or physician who does the scan will record your NT measurement on the enhanced first trimester screening eFTS requisition.

Today’s obstetrician gynecologist is required to interpret and in many cases perform ultrasound scans in the first trimester. In fact, certification of residency programs in many countries requires documentation of adequate exposure to and training in the evaluation of first-trimester ultrasound. Failure to understand the limitations of diagnostic ultrasound or inadequate training of physicians in this technique can result in grave complications for the patient and liability for health-care providers.

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period.
By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures. Ultrasounds performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 – 5 days of accuracy. The most accurate time is between 8 and 11 weeks gestation. This is because the fetus is growing so quickly that there is a big difference in size from week to week.

The first trimester can be an exciting but anxious time. Expectant parents often need to wait for up to 15 weeks before they get their public maternity hospital appointment and the reassurance that everything is fine with their baby. With our private ultrasound scans, you can get this reassurance as soon as 8 weeks gestation so you can begin to enjoy your pregnancy with peace of mind.
Pregnancy Scans performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 — 5 days of accuracy. The most accurate time for the due date calculation is between 8 and 11 weeks pregnant. This is because your baby is growing so quickly that there is a big difference in size from week to week. Also, the baby cannot bend and twist very much yet, so the length of the body is fairly constant.
However, the accuracy of the ultrasound examination is always dependent on the position of organs and internal bodily fluids.

It is common to be given a single ‘estimated due date’ EDD which corresponds the point at which it is estimated that your pregnancy will have lasted 40 weeks. It may be more helpful to be prepared for you baby arrive some time after 37 weeks, and to focus on 42 weeks as the time by which you have a good chance of having given birth. Many women with longer pregnancies find that everyone is asking whether they have had their baby yet, and that health care workers start to suggest inducing labour.
For some women this will be the right decision, but it is important to know that this is your decision to make. Charting temperature, monitoring mucus, using ovulation test kits and knowing times when you could have conceived, or having conceived by IVF may mean you have your own information about when you became pregnant.
These differences rarely effect gestational age dating by more than a day or two. measuring 11 mm would be approximately 5 weeks and 4 days gestational.
The early pregnancy scan was initially introduced with the primary intention of measuring the fetal crown—rump length to achieve accurate pregnancy dating. During the last decade, however, improvement in the resolution of ultrasound machines has made it possible to describe the normal anatomy of the fetus and diagnose or suspect the presence of a wide range of fetal defects in the first trimester of pregnancy. In some conditions, the sonographic features are similar to those described in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, but in others there are characteristic sonographic features confined to the first trimester.
An embryo of 10 postmenstrual weeks is less than half the length of an adult thumb, but already possesses several thousand named structures, practically any of which may be subject to developmental deviations 2. Thus, the embryonic period proper is of particular importance because the majority of congenital anomalies make their appearance during that time 2. These statements from embryological investigations have become highly relevant for those involved in first-trimester ultrasound scanning.
The term sonoembryology 3 designates the description of the embryonic anatomy, the normal anatomic relations and the development of abnormalities as visualized by ultrasound. To confirm the presence of normal anatomy or to make the diagnosis of an anomaly, we need knowledge of the normal embryonic development, including the appearance of the normal embryo.
This section is based on data from sonoembryological and embryological studies 4—
